The 3 step strategic plan
I said this three times today:
- Where are you going (what do you want to achieve and why)?
- What will it look like when you get there (your market, your offer, your organisation, etc. and why)?
- How will you get there (what will you do and why)?
Too many so-called strategic plans are full of warm fuzzies and empty of specifics.

Absolutely.
If it takes more than four hours it’s not a strategic plan!
Ah the good old days, when leaders of big companies didn’t have to hire a school-bus full of MBAs to read and summarise the strategic plans the school-bus full of MBAs they hired last year wrote!

Absolutely agree, ‘motherhood and apple pie’ fuzzies are often scattered through strategic plans and business cases. Being able to answer some key questions is critical to achieving the desired outcome. I have jotted down some thought about what those questions are in relation to projects and initiatives -> http://www.cioblog.co.nz/blog/2009/06/measuring-progress-part-1/

Nice Jim. I always recommend the strategic plan goes on one page. That way it can go on the wall and actually be followed instead of left in a drawer to gather dust.
